Etymology: < scientific Latin Margarodidae, family name (H. Morrison 1927, in Proc. Biol. Soc. Washington 40 99) < scientific Latin Margarodes , genus name (L. Guilding 1827, cited in Philos. Mag. 3 131 (1828), < Byzantine Greek μαργαρώδης : see margarodite n.) + -idae (see -id suffix³).

Any scale insect of the family Margarodidae, some of which form pearl-like subterranean cysts on the roots of plants and can be a pest of grapevines.The cysts, which are known as ‘ground pearls’, are sometimes used as beads in parts of the West Indies and South Africa.
