Etymology: < classical Latin margarītifer (Pliny; < margarīta or its etymon ancient Greek μαργαρίτης margarite n.1 + classical Latin -fer -fer comb. form) + -ous suffix (compare -iferous comb. form). N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (mā:ɹgăriti·fĕrəs) /ˌmɑːɡərɪˈtɪfərəs/.
Obsolete.
1. Of a bivalve mollusc: that yields pearls. Of a region: producing pearls from such molluscs.
