Etymology: < classical Latin interneciōn-, interneciō extermination, massacre, slaughter, cause of extermination < inter- inter- prefix + nec- , nex death, destruction (see necial adj.) + -iō -ion suffix1, after internecāre internecate v.
1. Total destruction, slaughter, extermination. Also: an instance of this, a massacre. Obsolete (archaic in later use).
