Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: indigenous adj., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < indigen- (in indigenous adj.) + -ist suffix.With sense A. 2 and sense B. compare Spanish indigenista, adjective (1927 or earlier) and noun (1935 or earlier), and also French indigéniste, adjective (1935 or earlier). Compare also Portuguese indigenista (1887 in the context of anthropology, or earlier).

1. Probably: a person born in a particular place; an indigene. Obsolete.Apparently an isolated use.In quot. 1858 with reference to British colonists in India; it might alternatively be read as showing the stronger sense ‘a person who maintains, or favours the maintenance of, a British identity and way of life in a colonial context’.
