单词 tautog
释义

tautogn.

Brit. /tɔːˈtɒɡ/, /ˈtɔːtɒɡ/, U.S. /ˌtɔˈtɔɡ/, /ˌtɑˈtɑɡ/, /ˈtɔˌtɑɡ/, /ˈtɑˌtɑɡ/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, tautogs.
Forms: 1700s tataag, 1700s tatogue, 1700s–1800s tautaug, 1800s tetaug, 1800s– tautog, 1900s– tautogue.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Narragansett. Or (ii) a borrowing from another Amerindian language. Etymon: Narragansett tautaũog.
Etymology: Either < Narragansett tautaũog (compare quot. 1643, plural of taut blackfish ( Tautoga onitis)), or < an unattested cognate in a related language such as Massachusett.
A bottom-dwelling marine fish, Tautoga onitis (family Labridae), with blotched brown and white coloration, found off the Atlantic coast of North America and popular (esp. formerly) as a game and food fish. Also called blackfish, oysterfish.Quot. 1643 apparently shows identification of Narragansett tautaũog with a different fish: cf. sheep's head n. 3.
