Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French tautochrone.
Etymology: < French tautochrone (1732; short for courbe tautochrone ; also 1732 as adjective) < post-classical Latin tautochronus , adjective (1726 or earlier) < tauto- tauto- comb. form + ancient Greek χρόνος time (see chronic adj.). Compare earlier tautochronous adj.
Physics.
A curve upon which a body moving under gravity or another force will reach the lowest point (or some other fixed point) in the same amount of time, regardless of the point from which it starts.
