Etymology: < German Tautoklin ( A. Breithaupt Paragenesis der Mineralien (1849) 154), use as noun of tautoklin tautokline adj. The mineral is so called ‘because it has the same rhombohedral angle as dolomite’ ( A. H. Chester Dict. Names Minerals (1896) at cited word).The following earlier quot. probably shows tautokline adj. (qualifying calc spar), but may have been apprehended as showing a noun (and hence, the mineral name) by later writers:1838 Rep. 6th Meeting Brit. Assoc. Advancem. Sci. 1837 184 The same observer [sc. Breithaupt] found the density of a calc spar of 105°·8' to be 2·741, and of another (tautokline) of 106°·10' to be 2·968.
