Etymology: < German Tautolith (A. Breithaupt 1827, in Jrnl. f. Chemie u. Physik 50 321), shortened < Tautometrolith (1827 in the same source; < Byzantine Greek ταὐτόμετρος of the same measure, referring to a supposed axial relation ( < ancient Greek ταὐτο- tauto- comb. form + -μετρος : see -metry comb. form) + German -lith -lite comb. form¹), with remodelling of the ending after -lite comb. form¹. Compare French tautolite (1829 or earlier; < German).

Mineralogy. Now disused.
