Etymology: < classical Latin abrādere to remove by rubbing, rub or scrape off, to remove by erosion, to shave or shave off, to injure by scraping, in post-classical Latin also to erase (frequently from 11th cent. in British sources) < ab- ab- prefix + rādere to scrape (see raze v.).

1. transitive. To wear down or smooth by rubbing or scraping; to damage the surface of (the skin, etc.) by such action. Also figurative.
