Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French accipitrin; Latin accipitrinus.
Etymology: < (i) French accipitrin (1756 or earlier), or its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin accipitrinus of or relating to a hawk (1569 or earlier; from late 18th cent. as a specific name in scientific Latin) < classical Latin accipitr- , accipiter accipiter n. + -īnus -ine suffix1. Compare classical Latin accipitrīna rapacity, post-classical Latin accipitrina hawkweed (4th cent.). Compare aquiline adj.
Ornithology.
Originally: designating or belonging to the former order or group Accipitres of birds of prey. In later use spec.: belonging to the family Accipitridae , which includes most broad-winged diurnal birds of prey, or (now chiefly) the subfamily Accipitrinae, which comprises the accipiters and their relatives. Also figurative: hawk-like.
