Etymology: Irregularly < post-classical Latin accinere (from 4th cent. in grammarians; already in classical Latin as accanere ; < ac- ac- prefix + canere to sing: see chant v.) + -ate suffix3.
Obsolete. rare.
transitive. To distinguish with a vocal accent or stress. Cf. accent v. 1a.
