A driving wheel of a bicycle which is able to revolve freely with the pedals at rest; a wheel or propeller that can run free of a clutch or other connection with motive power.The invention of the free wheel is generally attributed to William Van Anden of New York (1815–92), who invented one for velocipedes in 1869 ( U.S. Patent 88,238). There was a patent for free wheels on safety bicycles in 1895 (Harmon D.
