Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Spanish mijo, mi'jo.
Etymology: < American Spanish mijo (1974 or earlier), also (in Central America and the Caribbean) mi'jo (1975 or earlier), affectionate form of address to a male child or younger man, shortened < mi hijo (1867 or earlier as form of address) < mi my + hijo son (see hidalgo n.). Compare mi'ja n., mi'jita n., mi'jito n.
U.S.
As a form of address to a male: my dear, my child.
