Etymology: < American Spanish mija (1975 or earlier), also (in Central America and the Caribbean) mi'ja (1975 or earlier), affectionate form of address to a female child or younger woman, shortened < mi hija (1867 or earlier as form of address) < mi my + hija daughter, feminine form corresponding to hijo (see mi'jo n.). Compare mi'jita n., mi'jo n., mi'jito n.
U.S.
As a form of address to a female: my dear, my child.
