Etymology: < Entre-Deux-Mers, the name of a region in the Bordeaux wine region of France (13th cent. in Old French as Entre deux mars ) < entre between (see enter- prefix) + deux two (see deuce n.¹) + mers , plural of mer sea (see mere n.¹), after Old Occitan Entre doas mars (early 14th cent. or earlier), lit. ‘between two seas’; compare post-classical Latin Inter duo maria (11th cent.).The region is bounded by the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, before their confluence. They are both tidal rivers, and the effect of the tide can be felt as far as Bordeaux.

Wine produced in the Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux in south-western France. Now: spec. a dry, white wine produced in this region. The Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée n.) of Entre-Deux-Mers was modified in 1953 to classify white wines only.
