Compare earlier English adj.Compare Old English and early Middle English Ænglisc , early Middle English Anglisc , Middle English Anglisshe , variants of English adj.; especially with reference to the 11th-cent. charter of the so-called English Cnihtengild of London, a guild of leading citizens and merchants whose original function is uncertain and disputed (see S. E. Kelly Charters of St. Paul's, London (2004) 216–19):c1400 ( Writ of Edward the Confessor: Eng. Cnihtengild (Sawyer 1103) in S. E. Kelly Charters of St. Paul's, London (2004) 216 Ic cyþe eow þæt ic wille þæt mine men on Ænglisce cnihte gilde beon heore sace & heore socne wurðe, binnan burh & butan, ofer heora land & ofer heora men.1633 A.
