†1. Italian History. A member of a military and religious order founded in Bologna in 1233. Obsolete. rare.Although called ‘the Knights of the Holy Virgin’ in quot. 1895, the order is more usually called ‘Fratres Gaudentes’ or ‘the Brothers of the Jubilation’.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.

I. 114/2 Since the transfer of the seat of its general administration from Bordeaux to Paris in 1860, the society is known as the Society of Mary of Paris, to distinguish it from another society of Mary which was founded by several priests of Lyons in 1830.
