Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Marialit.

Etymology: < German Marialit (now Marialith ) < Maria (see Mary n.¹) + -lit -lite comb. form¹; in sense 1 apparently named by Ryllo (although publication and person unidentified), and in sense 2 by G. vom Rath (see below), in each case probably on account of the whiteness of the mineral:1866 G. vom Rath in Zeitschr. f. Deutsch. Geol. Ges. 18 637 Mit diesem Namen bezeichnete schon Ryllo den weissen Haüyn von Albano, welcher Name jedoch durch meine Analyse wieder frei geworden ist. Vom Rath's use is elsewhere explained as after the name of his wife, Marie vom Rath. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (mē^ə·riăləit) /ˈmɛərɪəlaɪt/.
