Etymology: < post-classical Latin Mariale (from c1200 or earlier in British sources; from the late 15th to the early 17th cent. a common title of printed books of Marian devotion), probably formed < Maria (see Mary n.¹) on the model of manuale manual n.: the corresponding adjective Marialis is rare and apparently only much later than the noun (1513 in collocation Mariale opus). Compare French marial book of miracles attributed to the Virgin Mary (c1330 in Middle French), Spanish marial (1596 or earlier), medieval Greek Μαριάλε (a1614).
