Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: dung n.1, -er suffix1; dung v., -er suffix1.
Etymology: Partly < dung n.1 + -er suffix1, and partly < dung v. + -er suffix1.Perhaps attested earlier as a surname, compare Rog. Dunger' (1221), Will. Donger (1327), Rob. Dunger (1332), etc.; however, these could alternatively be interpreted as showing transmission errors for or variants of other surnames, e.g. Aunger, Danger, Daunger.
Obsolete. rare.

Etymology: Apparently imitative of the sound of a worn-out engine, especially that of a motor vehicle.In form dunger with ending remodelled after -er suffix1. Compare earlier banger n.1 5.

Something (sounding) mechanically worn out or not in first-class order, esp. an old car.
