An insoluble, usually buff-coloured, amorphous organic compound originally obtained by heating ammonium thiocyanate, and formed as a by-product during the production of melamine. ΚΠ 1835 Rec. Gen. Sci. 1 185 Melam.—This substance is procured from hydro-sulpho-cyanate of ammonia. 1835 Rec. Gen. Sci. 1 186 By washing, the salts are taken up, and the grey matter called melam, which remains, is insoluble in water. 1838 T. Thomson Chem. Org.
