Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Melaleuca.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Melaleuca (Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 12, 1767) II. 509) < ancient Greek μέλας black (see melano- comb. form) + λευκός white (see leuco- comb. form). Compare French mélaleuque (1800).

A genus of mostly Australian shrubs and trees of the family Myrtaceae which have brightly coloured protruding stamens united in bundles (rather than separate as in the callistemons); (also melaleuca) a plant of this genus; the wood of a tree or shrub of this genus.Individual species are also called honey myrtle, paperbark, tea tree.
