Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek μῆκος , -meter comb. form2.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μῆκος length (see meco- comb. form) + -meter comb. form2. Compare earlier mecometer n.The reference to Watkin in quot. 1900 at sense 1 may be connected with a patent of 31 Dec. 1890 ‘H. S. S. Watkin — Ascertaining position of objects and laying guns’; this patent was withheld from publication under section 44 of the Patents, Designs and Trade Marks Act 1883.
1. Military. An instrument for finding the range for infantry fire. Now rare.

An instrument for the accurate measurement of distances by means of reflected polarized light.Light elliptically polarized at a microwave frequency is beamed at a reflector at the distance to be measured, and the polarization of the reflected light is analysed to find the amount by which the distance of the reflector exceeds a whole number of modulation half-wavelengths.

Microwave Mekometer’) using elliptical polarization modulation of a light beam at 9·4 Gc/s (9400 Mc/s) and intended for the accurate measurement of distances of the order of 50 m.
