Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish melada.
Etymology: < Spanish melada (a1734) < melar to boil sugar a second time (a1734; < miel honey (1220–50) < classical Latin mel mell n.2) + -ada -ade suffix. Compare Spanish melaza (see molasses n.). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (melēi·dă) /mɛˈleɪdə/.
U.S. Now rare.
In sugar-making: the juice of the sugar cane after it has been concentrated by boiling; = massecuite n.
