Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a French lexical item, and partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: anthropo- comb. form, -lite comb. form1.
Etymology: < anthropo- comb. form + -lite comb. form1, after French anthropolite (1767 as †antropolite, or earlier; also anthropolithe (1763 or earlier)) and its model post-classical Latin Anthropolithus (Gesner 1752; compare quot. 1778). Compare German Anthropolith (1762 or earlier), †Anthropolit (1776 or earlier). Compare earlier zoolite n.In French and German, forms with -lit(e) and -lith(e) are variants of the same word, with no difference in pronunciation (compare discussion at -lite comb. form1 and also the German forms cited in quots. 1848, 1865 at anthropolith n. N.E.D. (1885) gives the pronunciation as (æ̆nþrōu·pŏləit) /ænˈθrəʊpəlaɪt/.

A petrified human body, or part of one; a fossil of (supposedly) human origin. Also: a human figure made of stone; figurative a person without feelings or emotions. Cf. anthropolith n.
