Etymology: < (i) Middle French anathematiser, anathematizer (1378 as anathematisier , with different conjugation; French anathématiser ), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin anathematizare to curse, excommunicate (a person) (4th or 5th cent. in Augustine and Jerome), to curse and swear (Vulgate) < Hellenistic Greek ἀναθεματίζειν to devote to evil (Septuagint), (intransitive) to curse and swear (New Testament) < ἀναθέματ- , ἀνάθεμα (see anathema n.1) + -ίζειν -ize suffix.Compare Spanish anatematizar (c1400), Portuguese anatematizar (15th cent.).
