Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: English on last.

Etymology: Probably < on last ( < on prep. + last adv., adj., and n.⁴ Phrases 1a; although this is rare and first attested later: see note), with reduction of the first element (compare a prep.¹ and o , variant of on prep.). Compare at last at last adv., adj., and n.⁴ Phrases 1a(a)(i).The early attestation of the α. forms suggests that the first element is on prep.
