单词 alast
释义

alastadv.

Forms:

α. early Middle English olast, early Middle English o last, early Middle English o least (south-west midlands), early Middle English oleast (south-west midlands).

β. early Middle English aleast (south-west midlands), Middle English alast, Middle English a-last, Middle English alest.

Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: English on last.
Etymology: Probably < on last ( < on prep. + last adv., adj., and n.4 Phrases 1a; although this is rare and first attested later: see note), with reduction of the first element (compare a prep.1 and o , variant of on prep.). Compare at last at last adv., adj., and n.4 Phrases 1a(a)(i).The early attestation of the α. forms suggests that the first element is on prep. However, the β. forms perhaps partly show a reduced form of at last at last adv., adj., and n.4 Phrases 1a(a)(i) (compare discussion at a- prefix1). The form on last in quot. a1475 (several times in the manuscript of this text) may perhaps shows late substitution of on prep. for the first element in alast adv. The Old English phrase on lāste (also on lāst ) ( < on prep. + last n.1) is unrelated. Its usual meaning is ‘behind, after’; however, on lāst is occasionally attested in the sense ‘finally, at last’; compare e.g.:OE Ælfric Let. to Sigeweard (De Veteri et Novo Test.) (Laud) 59 Paulus ferde wide geond þas woruld bodiende manegum leodscipum, oð þæt he on last becom in to Rome byrig & þær eac bodode. This almost certainly shows an independent development of the meaning of the Old English phrase, rather than an antedating of on lăst , the presumed etymon of alast adv. Compare also Old English on lætemestum at last ( < on prep. + the dative of Old English lætemest latemost adj. used as a noun):OE tr. Defensor Liber Scintillarum (1969) xxviii. 204 Uinum..ingreditur blande sed in nouissimo mordebit ut coluber : win..hit ingæð swæslice ac on latemystum hit tyrþ ealswa snaca.
Obsolete.
= at last at last adv., adj., and n.4 Phrases 1a(a)(i).In quot. 1340 also: furthermore.
