Etymology: < medieval Latin carnārium in same sense, in ancient Latin a place for flesh, a larder, etc., neuter of carnārius belonging to flesh, < caro, carn-em flesh. In French charnier.
Now rare.
A charnel or charnel house; also attributive.Still used at Norwich as the name of the crypt below the chapel of the cathedral grammar school, formerly one of the monastic buildings attached to the cathedral.
