Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin malaris.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin malaris (in ossa malaria from at least early 18th cent.; compare earlier use of the noun mala in ossa malarum , os malae ) < classical Latin māla jaw, cheek bone, cheek (of unknown origin; compare maxilla n.) + -āris -ar suffix1. Compare French malaire (1732).
