Etymology: < the name of Mrs Malaprop ( < malapropos adv.), a character in R. B. Sheridan's play The Rivals (1775) who habitually confuses long words, e.g. in the expression ‘the very pineapple of politeness’ (for ‘the very pinnacle of politeness’).
