Etymology: < scientific Latin Malapterurus ( B. G. E. de la V. de Lacépède Hist. nat. poiss. (1803) V. 90), irregularly < ancient Greek μαλα- (in μαλακο- malaco- comb. form) + pter- ( < ancient Greek πτέρυξ wing, fin: see pterygo- comb. form) + -urus ( < ancient Greek οὐρά tail: see uro- comb. form²).

Zoology.

A tropical African genus of freshwater catfishes which are capable of giving an electric shock; (also malapterurus) a catfish of this genus, esp. Malapterurus electricus.
