Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; originally modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: caravan n., -eer suffix1.
Etymology: < caravan n. + -eer suffix1, originally after French caravanier person who travels in a caravan (1717 in the passage translated in quot. 1718, or earlier). Compare earlier caravanist n. With sense 2 compare also slightly later caravanner n. 3.
1. A member of an itinerant company of merchants or traders who travel together in Asia or northern Africa; the leader of such a company. Cf. caravanist n. 1.
