Etymology: < Barbad- (in Barbados, the name of an island and (subsequently) a country in the Lesser Antilles (Leeward Islands)) + -ian suffix. Compare Barbados n.The place name is attested in Spanish contexts from the early 16th cent. and in English contexts from at least the early 17th cent. It was reportedly formed in Portuguese < the plural of barbado , use as noun of barbado bearded ( < barba beard (see barb n.1) + -ado -ado suffix), perhaps with allusion to the bearded fig trees ( Ficus citrifolia) growing on the island (now a national symbol). With forms in -bajan compare Bajan adj. and n.
