Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Dutch, combined with an English element. Etymons: English wearr , warre , -ock suffix; Dutch weer , -ock suffix.

Etymology: Probably < either Old English wearr, Middle English warre callus (see warre n.) or its cognate Middle Dutch weer callus (especially on the hands or feet) + -ock suffix. Compare classical Latin verruca verruca n.An etymology from early modern Dutch weerooghe pimple on the eyelid, stye (1588 in Kiliaan; Dutch weeroog ; < Middle Dutch weer + ōghe eye n.¹) has alternatively been suggested, but seems less likely on both semantic and chronological grounds. Sc. National Dict. (at cited word) records the word as still in use in Fife and Caithness in 1974.
