Etymology: Alteration of blandishment n., perhaps after Spanish ablandamiento blandishment, flattery (first half of the 15th cent.; < ablandar to blandish, to flatter (1251; < a- ad- prefix + blandar blandish v.) + -miento -ment suffix).Compare the following earlier quot., which (in the absence of any evidence for a formally parallel noun in French) appears to show a parallel alteration of blandiment n. (with remodelling of the first syllable after words in ad- prefix):1663 Case Mary Carleton 23 I now addicted my self to..more facile pastimes of literature; Romances, and other Heroical Adblandiments.
