Etymology: < un- prefix1 + led, past participle of lead v.1 Compare later led adj.Compare Old Icelandic úleiddr . A much earlier parallel formation may be shown by Old English unlǣd , perhaps in sense ‘(of cattle) untended, stray’ (one isolated attestation), although it has sometimes been alternatively interpreted as showing the more common (but less semantically plausible) unlede adj.:eOE Let. to Edward the Elder (Sawyer 1445) in F.
