Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item; rprobably modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: subtraction n.
Etymology: Alteration of subtraction n., probably after Middle French substraccion, substraction (compare Anglo-Norman sustraxion , Anglo-Norman and Middle French sustraction ; Middle French, French soustraction ) action of withdrawing or removing a person or thing (c1370 or earlier), mathematical operation of subtraction (c1400), alteration (with prefix substitution: see sous- prefix) of Anglo-Norman subtraccion , subtraccioun , Anglo-Norman and Middle French subtraction subtraction n. Compare post-classical Latin substractio removal, withdrawal, departure (14th cent. in British sources). Compare also slightly later substract v. In some modern uses perhaps a typographical error for subtraction n.
Now chiefly nonstandard and rare.
1. The withdrawal or withholding of something beneficial or useful, or to which another person is entitled; (also) a person's withdrawing from a place. Cf. subtraction n. 3. Now historical.
