Etymology: Middle English < Old French truant, French truand adjective (12th cent. in Godefroy), (now only) as noun = Provençal truan, Spanish truhan, Portuguese truão; probably from a Celtic source (Thurneysen): compare Welsh truan wretched, a wretch, Gaelic truaghan wretched, trudanach vagabond.
