Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French mescheant, meschant, mescheoir.
Etymology: < Middle French mescheant (late 12th cent. in Old French as adjective in sense A. 2), meschant (late 14th cent. in Old French as adjective in senses A. 1 (the predominant sense from the end of the 15th cent.) and A. 2, and as noun in sense ‘wrongdoer’; French méchant ), present participle of mescheoir (1155) to be unlucky < mes- mis- prefix2 + Old French cheoir to fall (see escheat n.).
