Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish Mescalero.
Etymology: < American Spanish Mescalero (adjective and noun, recorded as ethnonym from c1745; now more usual in form Mezcalero ), lit. ‘(person) of the mescal’ < mescal mescal n. + -ero -eer suffix1, alluding to the people's traditional use of the mescal plant ( Agave spp.) as a staple food.
