Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a variant or alteration of another lexical item; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin titulāre ; title v.
Etymology: Either (i) < classical Latin titulāre to title (see title v.), or (ii) a variant or alteration of title v., after classical Latin titulāre. Compare earlier entitle v., intitule v.Compare Middle French tituler to inscribe as a title (14th cent. in an isolated attestation), to give a name to (a person or thing) (15th cent.; rare).
1. transitive. To give a specified name or title to (something); to designate, style, call. Also: to speak of or describe (something) as being of a particular kind or possessing a particular quality.Not in common use after the 18th century; now only in occasional use in humorous, informal contexts.
