Brit. /ˈpɒnsəʊ/, /pɒnˈsəʊ/, U.S. /pɑnˈsoʊ/

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ponceau.
Etymology: < French ponceau (1669 as noun in sense B. 1, 1773 or earlier as adjective, 1886 or earlier in sense B. 2), transferred uses of ponceau poppy (1409 in Middle French; earlier as pouncel (12th cent. in Old French in an isolated attestation, subsequently at the beginning of the 14th cent. as pooncel )) < poun , poon peacock (see pawn n.2) + -cel , diminutive suffix (see -el suffix2), the flower being so called on account of its vivid colours, which are compared to those of a peacock. N.E.D. (1907) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (poṅsō) /pɔ̃so/.
