单词 poncho
释义

ponchon.

Brit. /ˈpɒn(t)ʃəʊ/, U.S. /ˈpɑn(t)ʃoʊ/
Forms: 1700s pancho, 1700s puncho, 1700s– poncho, 1800s poncha, 1800s ponche.
Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish poncho.
Etymology: < American Spanish poncho (18th cent. in this sense; earlier denoting a woven woollen garment worn by men to keep warm, similar to a cape or blanket (1608 or earlier with reference to Peru), and also denoting a cloak made of nutria otterskins worn by the people living near the River Paraná (1530)), further origin uncertain and disputed. In quot. 1717 at main sense via French poncho (1716 in the passage translated, apparently reporting the Spanish word).Mapuche has frequently been suggested as the source of the Spanish word (see A. Febrés Arte de la lengua general del reyno de Chile (1765), D. Granada Vocab. rioplatense razonado (ed. 2, 1890)), but this is unlikely, given that the Spanish word is attested early and in a context relating to an entirely different region; the word for ‘poncho’ given in current dictionaries of Mapuche is macuñ. J. Corominas Diccionario crítico etimológico castellano e hispánico (1981), s.v., suggests a transferred use in sense ‘(of cloth) discoloured’ of Spanish poncho lazy, slothful, slovenly (probably ultimately of imitative origin), and attempts to link that adjective with pocho (of cloth) discoloured (of uncertain origin); however, both adjectives are apparently first attested considerably later than the noun (poncho in 1737, pocho in 1822).
Originally, in South America: a cloak made of an oblong piece of thick woollen cloth, with a slit in the middle for the head. Now frequently more widely: any garment in this style.
