单词 achillea
释义

achillean.

Brit. /ˌakᵻˈliːə/, /əˈkɪlɪə/, U.S. /əˈkɪliə/
Forms:

α. Old English achilea, Old English 1500s– achillea, early Middle English acyllea, early Middle English acylleia, 1700s achillaea.

β. Old English achylleos.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Achillēa.
Etymology: < classical Latin Achillēa, Achillīa, Achillēos one or other of various plants supposed to possess wound-healing properties (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek Ἀχίλλειος woundwort, use as noun of ancient Greek Ἀχίλλειος (adjective) of Achilles (see Achillean adj.). Compare Middle French, French achillée (1572 in Paré).According to ancient authors, the plant was discovered by the Greek hero Achilles and used by him for healing wounds (compare quots. OE2, 1597). The word was evidently reborrowed in the 16th cent.; there is unlikely to be continuity of use with Old English and early Middle English.
Any of numerous plants of the chiefly Eurasian genus Achillea (family Asteraceae ( Compositae)), which comprises hardy perennials, typically with finely divided aromatic leaves and corymbose flower-heads; esp. the common garden flower A. filipendulina, having large convex clusters of bright yellow flower heads on tall stiff stems. Also (in form Achillea): the genus itself. Cf. milfoil n. 1, sneezewort n. 1, yarrow n. 1Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species plantarum (1753) II. 896.
