Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. citramontane adj. and n.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin citrā.
Etymology: < classical Latin citrā (adverb and preposition) on this side (of), originally ablative feminine singular of citer (adjective) on this side (see citerior adj.). Compare cis- prefix.Attested earliest in the first half of the 17th cent. in the Latin loan citramontane adj. Formations within English are found from the second half of the 17th cent.
Occasionally used to form adjectives with the sense ‘on this (i.e. the nearer) side of ——’; = cis- prefix 1 (which is more commonly used).
citracaucasian adj. Obsolete rare on this side of the Caucasus.
