Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Citral.

Etymology: < German Citral (1888) < citr- (in Citrone citron n.) + -al -al suffix².The substance was first isolated by J. Bertram in the laboratory of Schimmel & Co. in Leipzig. The name was proposed in the company's newsletter for October 1888, with allusion to the substance's fragrance, which resembles that of lemons. With citral a and citral b compare German Citral I and Citral II (F. Tiemann 1899, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 31 3320).

Either of two isomeric terpenoid liquid aldehydes found in many plant oils, having a lemon fragrance and used in perfumery: (a) (the trans-isomer) = geranial n. (more fully citral a); (b) (the cis-isomer) = neral n. (more fully citral b). Also: a mixture of these isomers.Systematic name: 3,7-dimethylocta-2,6-dienal; (CH₃)₂C=CHCH₂CH₂C(CH₃)=CHCHO.
