Brit. /ˈsɪtəʊlə/, /sᵻˈtəʊlə/, U.S. /ˈsɪˌtoʊlər/, /səˈtoʊlər/
Forms:

α. late Middle English seteler, late Middle English setoler, late Middle English soteler, late Middle English sytolyr, 1500s 1800s– citoler, 1700s cyteller, 1700s cysteller.

β. late Middle English cytolerer.

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French citoleur.
Etymology: < Middle French citoleur (13th cent. in Old French) < citoler to play the citole (see citoling n.) + -eur -er suffix2. Compare Spanish †citolador (a1260). Compare earlier citoling n.The form soteler may result from association with subtle adj. (compare α. forms at that entry). With the β. forms compare -er suffix1 3. Apparently attested earlier as surname, e.g. William le Citolur (1269), Agn' la Setoler (1311), Robertus le Cetoler (1339), although it is unclear whether these should be taken as reflecting currency of the Middle English word or an otherwise unattested Anglo-Norman noun.
Music. historical in later use.
