Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from Persian. Etymon: Persian *ṭarḥ andām.

Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < an unattested Persian compound *ṭarḥ andām ( < Urdu ṭarḥ a kind or its etymon Persian ṭarḥ plan, design, or that word's etymon Arabic ṭarḥ act of throwing (now usually specifically ‘expulsion, rejection’, ‘banishment’, and similar senses) + Persian andām body), apparently denoting a kind of cloth for the body (i.e. used for clothing), but this poses semantic problems and may be a folk etymology.

Now historical.

A plain muslin, usually of superior quality, produced in Bengal. Also as a count noun.
