A genus of mosses of the family Polytrichaceae, whose members have calyptrae covered with fine hairs; (also polytrichum) a moss of this genus, esp. Polytrichum commune, the golden maidenhair or hair moss (also polytrichum moss).Valid publication of the genus name: J. Hedwig Species muscorum (1801) 88.
