Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French polytype.
Etymology: < French polytype kind of stereotype (1786) < poly- poly- comb. form + -type -type suffix. Compare earlier polytypage n., stereotype n., and also polytype v.In quot. 1916 at sense 2 rendering German Polytypie polytypism (see polytypy n.).
1. Printing. A cast, or form of stereotype, made from an intaglio matrix obtained by pressing a plate (as a woodcut, engraving, etc.) into semi-fluid metal. Also: a copy or print produced from such a cast. Now chiefly historical.
